The Intel 310 series SSD have had their share of problems as well.Īs far as the current generation of solid state drives goes, I highly recommend an M4 drive. A quick search on Google should yield a plethora of information. I will soon replace the 120GB Vertex 3 in my Mini with another M4 as the Vertex 3 has been problematic.

I also have a 128GB M4 serving as the boot drive for my '08 Mac Pro, also without issue.

On my '09, I was running the 02 firmware trouble free before upgrading to the 09 firmware. I have a 256GB M4 in my 2011 15" MBP and another in my 2009 13" MBP, no problem with either. I have quite a few solid state drives and the only one giving me any kind of issue is my 120GB Vertex 3. I was looking for some real world experiences of SSDs in my model MBP! The M4 is the cheapest out of the bunch and I've happily run a C300 in my Windows desktop for quite some time, but my research tells me running SATA3 SSDs in my model of MBP is a bit problematic. I'm thinking something around the 256GB mark would be fine for now and looking at OCZ Vertex 3, Crucial M4 and Intel 510. Looking to swap the 500 GB HDD in my MBP for an SSD. (and when I say "fast" I mean it relative to the other SSDs, compared to a HDD they're all shitloads faster)

I'd consider them if you see them for significantly cheaper than other options. Not as fast as the Samsung or others but they occasionally go on big sales, like almost $1/GB pricing. On the lower end there's the Kingston Toshiba based stuff, I believe the later generation ones use the other controller Apple uses. Newegg actually had them for $330 a little while ago in a sale.and I'd expect them to go down again when the 6gbps 830 comes out, which will supposedly take over the 470's normal price points (so expect around $400-450 for 256GB).

They perform pretty similarly to the Intel 320. That's what I've heard about the M4 in general, like on launch it had issues for a lot of people, but the firmware updates have seemed to make it fine for everyone.Īnother option is the Samsung 470 if you don't mind a 3gbps drive, and it's one of the controllers Apple appears to use if you're looking from a reliability standpoint. I know that Crucial now provides tools for updating firmware on a Mac (with a burned bootable disc).Įverything else I've heard says to avoid OCZ and SandForce like the plague if you care at all about reliability.Įverything I've read about the M4 on a Mac is that the latest firmware updates fix any compatibility issues. I was hesitant to trust the 830 just on brand alone, so that tipped the scales for the M4.įor anyone interested, I also ordered: as reviews stated it actually works in MBPs, and it's substantially cheaper than an OptiBay or DataDoubler.Ĭan't speak to SATA III in your model specifically, but most of my research has pointed to SSD firmware issues being the root of most compatibility issues.

The 470 and M4 seem to be regarded similarly in terms of reliability, but the M4 has more room to grow for performance if/when I upgrade to a machine with SATA III. The first drive I considered seriously was the Samsung 470 series, but I had seen that the 830 series was about to be released. I ultimately chose reliability over performance. I just ordered a 256GB Crucial M4 for my mid-2010 MBP.
